Chief Oceans Scientist and associate Vice President of Oceans Science at the Environmental Defense Fund

Douglas N. Rader, PhD is chief oceans scientist and associate vice president of Oceans Science at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). He advises EDF leadership on the scientific aspects of policies and programs affecting oceans. He works with international, national, and regional teams to leverage cutting-edge science in current Oceans Program strategies and projects, and helps define EDF engagement on emerging issues, including resilience to climate change and the threats to seafood posed by plastics. His current focus includes empowering fishing communities and other stakeholders through enhanced fisheries management that can help achieve global upside predictions, while also enhancing availability of nutritious seafood to vulnerable human populations worldwide. He has worked extensively in the U.S., the European Union, Mexico, Peru, Chile, China, Japan, Belize, Cuba, and elsewhere around the world. Douglas has worked as a senior scientist for EDF since 1988, and previously managed EDF’s Oceans Program work in the Mid-Atlantic, Atlantic Southeast, and Caribbean regions. He formerly worked for the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Divisions of Coastal Management and Environmental Management, and was the first director of the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Program.
